As founder and CEO Ben Graetz tells it, the original inspiration for his Grassrootz charity fundraising platform was his young son’s stay in hospital after a major operation, and his decision to support the work of the Starlight Foundation which made his son’s lengthy stay so much more bearable.
At BlueChilli we’re hugely proud that Ben was able to welcome a big crowd to our Sydney office today to announce Grassrootz has been selected to power the Blackmores Sydney Running Festival 2017, one of the world’s great running events.
The Blackmores Sydney Running Festival is an iconic event that features a marathon, a half marathon, a 9km bridge run and a family fun run. “It is a spectacular course with a run over the Sydney Harbour Bridge and a finish at the Opera House”, says Wayne Larden, CEO of Pont3, the organisers of the Festival.
The Festival has big goals when it comes to fundraising. “We want the Blackmores Sydney Running Festival to be not only the best running event in Australia, but also the biggest fundraising event – supporting local charities more than ever”, says Larden.
“Grassrootz had the best user experience, a superior offering on mobile devices, which is increasingly important for today’s donors, as well as the lowest transaction fees. By choosing Grassrootz, we will provide a better experience for event participants and enable more money to be raised for charity”.
How big a deal is lower transaction fees? Well, transaction fees vary from platform to platform, but we estimate most charities would save $50,000 for every $1M raised if they chose Grassrootz, and that’s $50,000 that goes towards providing more charitable services!
But that’s not the only reason we’re proud of Ben and Grassrootz. Perhaps most importantly, this will be Ben’s second tech startup with BlueChilli, and we’re honoured that this experienced ex-Microsoft executive has chosen us to work with him again on another audaciously ambitious tech startup. The people listed in the Product Team on the About page? They’re our awesome designers, developers and product managers.
By the way, Ben is still an active supporter of the Starlight Foundation and you can help him achieve his $3,000 fund raising goal for this year’s Tour De Kids here. And yes, Grassrootz is the platform accepting your donation.
