One of our portfolio startups The Safety Compass won both the Patron’s Award and the Good Design Selection Award at the recent Australian Good Design Awards. The Safety Compass is a Work Health and Safety risk management tool designed to help workers assess, manage and avoid dangers in their workplace.
Presenting the award, patron Gerhard Vorster said of the decision, “…Design doesn’t require full creativity all the time – often design is about looking at what we have today and putting it together in different ways. And that is why I’m delighted to announce that the Patron’s Prize this year goes to an entity that actually just did that – that took an existing platform which is a smartphone, put a new technology like augmented reality on top of that and actually created functionality which is not only of use in safety but beyond that in the future.”
We’re stoked about this award for The Safety Compass because it recognises the great design and coding BlueChilli delivers for founders like Adam. We don’t go out seeking design awards for our work but we’re very proud of the recognition The Safety Compass has received for what we’ve built.
According to the Good Design Awards, “The Patron’s Prize for Australian Design was created to recognise and celebrate the best Australian designed product or service in the annual Good Design Awards and is awarded to an entry that has the potential to shape the future economic, social, cultural and environmental aspects of our planet.”
About Adam Poole and The Safety Compass
Originally a mechanic by trade, a workplace injury left founder Adam Poole with a permanent disability and inspired a career in work health and safety.
Prior to becoming a tech startup founder, Adam had worked in some of the country’s most dangerous environments – large scale construction, infrastructure and process facilities where the wrong decision can get you killed.
There is nothing more important to Adam than his family and being able to empower workers with life saving information inspires The Safety Compass vision of ‘creating a world where everyone comes home from work’.
The Safety Compass uses intuitive augmented reality to communicate hazard information to users in the field. By accessing the worker’s physical location, the app presents vital information on present dangers straight to the worker’s phone, avoiding the necessity of bulky safety manuals to locate and manage risk. Using the phone’s inbuilt camera and GPS system, the app displays real and present dangers to the viewer that adapt and compensate for the viewer’s field of vision.
Here’s a short explainer video about how The Safety Compass works.
