Last month BlueChilli was a proud prize sponsor of Australia’s national #HealthHack 2016, which was a resounding success. Across hackathon venues in Sydney, Melbourne, Canberra, Brisbane and Perth, the weekend of 14-16 October saw more than 300 people from diverse professions and backgrounds come together to work on 47 health-related technology challenges.

Some of the creative solutions to health problems included:

  • A mobile app that automatically syncs and displays subtitles at the cinema for people with hearing difficulties;
  • A proof of concept app to help some Queensland’s hospitals track patients in regional communities;
  • An app that allows real-time tracking of outbreaks of antibiotic-resistant bacteria;
  • An app that helps general practitioners make choices about diabetes treatment options for their patients;
  • An app that uses relevant demographic data to assist the general public with scheduling regular, appropriately-spaced checkups.
  • An online epilepsy diary that helps doctors track symptoms and provide better treatment outcomes.
  • An app that aims to reduce the number of safety incidents in Victorian hospitals through improving the reporting of already available data.

Of course these were just some of the projects teams worked on, and all the participants are to be congratulated for taking time out of their busy lives to volunteer their expertise, creativity and collaboration.

There are already tangible outcomes — we’ve learned the patient tracking app prototype is already being assessed and tested in a Queensland hospital (follow the team’s progress on twitter @thehungrycells).

You can find a full list of the problems that were pitched here and all code produced over the weekend is open source and available on github. The website is also worth checking out.

The winners of each of the hackathons won a range of prizes including a free subscription to BlueChilli’s 99toLaunch online validation program (usually $1,295), a distillation of many of the most important parts of our full startup accelerator program curriculum.

Congratulations again to everyone who helped bring HealthHack 2016 to life, we look forward to seeing it bigger and better in 2017!
